hi. i'm luca. i originally posted my what is shoegaze music documentary in 2019, when discourse about the genre was very limited & shoegaze wasn't really being spoken about online. i created that film to shine a light on a genre that was very close to me (literally & metaphorically - i'm from the same thames valley the og shoegaze scene is from, have played in many shoegaze bands & have produced two dissertations on the genre).
that film launched a whole movement within the scene, with people discovering pedal partners & shoegaze music through that film. in the years since, paige, becca & myself have continued championing shoegaze with our channel pedal partners, reaching shoegazers worldwide. we've even made our own signature pedals for the genre which we use when recording & playing with our shoegaze bands abstract in sound & violet oscillation.
in this post i'll look at the genre from both my scholarly perspective, but also from my lived experience as a shoegazer.

the history of shoegaze music genre
shoegaze is a broad term to describe a genre, or style, of music that originated in the united kingdom & ireland in the 1980s.
the genre found prominence in the thames valley region of the uk in cities & towns such as oxford, london & reading. it became known as "the scene that celebrates itself" a term coined due to the common occurrence of bands sharing members, as well as the musician's tendency to watch each other's gigs. the thames valley shoegaze scene included some of the genres most prominent bands, shoegaze artists such as slowdive, ride, chapterhouse & lush. later shoegaze bands from the thames valley include abstract in sound & violet oscillation. one of the genre's most influential acts & one that many see as the pinnacle of the genre, originated in dublin, ireland. my bloody valentine formed in 1983 and after success with several early eps & debut mbv album "isn't anything" the band released what is seen by many as one of the best shoegaze albums ever created "loveless" in 1991.
so, what is shoegaze music?
so what does shoegaze sound like? & where did the term shoegaze even come from? the shoegaze sound can be defined by visceral noise, which in itself is compromised of warm waves of distortion, reverb, particularly reverse reverb & a plethora of other shoegaze guitar effects such as delay, phaser & tremolo. there is arguably not another music genre as closely associated with effects pedals. the genre's name derives from its players tendency to gaze down at their guitar pedals at gigs - instead of at the audience. listening to this kind of music is an emotional experience that takes up the listener's senses. traditional ideas of musical showmanship are usurped by the use of noise as expression. experiencing songs such as "souvlaki space station" by slowdive & "mesmerized" by abstract in sound leaves the listener with a feeling of jouissance. an ecstatic joy, an energy unable to define, in awe at the vastness of nature & the universe. shoegaze songs such as "silk" by violet oscillation, have a cinematic quality to them utilising the guitar in a unique fashion to resonate with the listener.
the genre expresses all this in ways that traditional musical language cannot. shoegaze musicians, particularly guitarists, turn to noise in order to best represent complex feelings. it's a texturally rich genre - whilst modern pop songs tend to only have three or four layers at most, the layers within shoegaze are innumerable, making it a genre of long-term value, with something new to discover within a piece on each new listen.
what makes a song shoegaze?
shoegaze music is categorically guitar music. shoegaze songs emphasise texture over structure. unlike with traditional music forms, the human voice is not a central component of the music. instead, lush vocals take up an ethereal form, appearing as an instrument layered amongst & indistinguishable from the reverberated guitars of the genre. this can be heard in songs such as "reminiscer" by abstract in sound. vocal parts are not given precedence over other instruments, instead melting into the mix to create a hazy sonic palette.
90s shoegaze bands
for many shoegaze fans, there are three archetypical bands from which all things shoegaze can be traced. slowdive's "souvlaki" represents the dreamier side of the genre with layered guitar parts cascading off relaxed drum parts, delay & modulation effects a key part of affairs. released in 1993 the album remains a cornerstone of the genre. my bloody valentine's "loveless" represents the heavier, noise-driven side of the genre with a revolutionary approach taken with the use of a unique guitar technique known as glide guitar. ride's "nowhere" represents the pop side of the genre, with the oxford quartet crafting an album of jangly guitars & neo-psychedelia.

in the 21st century shoegaze is a global phenomena & more popular than ever. the original darlings of the genre reunited in the 2000s & 2010s - mbv in 2007 & both slowdive & ride band in 2014. meanwhile there are shoegaze bands as far afield as japan, australia & the united states. shoegaze is a sound that has reverberated across music & continues to have an impact to this day, with this very channel being a testament to the staying power of the genre.
